Christian Pulisic is just one of many young stars that Borussia Dortmund have on their books at the minute, so we thought we’d take the time to do a quick scout report so you can get to know him a little bit better!
Pulisic really is building up an immense reputation at just the tender age of 18. Pulisic was signed by Borussia Dortmund in February 2015 but it only took 15 youth team games for him to make it into the first team squad, that’s how impressive he was! Since then he has gone from strength to strength, gaining plenty of experience at the top level, in April 2016 he even became the youngest foreigner ever to score in the Bundesliga.
Pulisic is an attacking player and is in his element when played out wide, he loves to receive the ball with a defender tight to him and use his incredible agility to beat his man. The young American has an extremely low centre of gravity allowing him to change direction at unbelievable speed and this is often enough to get away from the opponent. This isn’t all Pulisic is blessed with, he’s quick on the ball and has excellent close control. The way Pulisic keeps the ball so close to him makes it difficult for defenders to actually tackle him so if he loses possession it’s often through his distribution rather than when he runs with the ball.
For someone of such a young age, Pulisic is always composed on the ball and this is a real asset of his as he affords himself time to choose the right option. Despite this, sometimes his final product lets him down and his consistency in terms of this could do with some work. His only other real weakness is literally his weakness. Pulisic’s lack of strength means unless he is able to use his dribbling ability to keep the ball, he is often muscled off the ball. This is largely due to his size but this doesn’t have to be a huge problem throughout his career and he’d do well to watch Eden Hazard play to rectify this. In my opinion, Eden Hazard is one of the best shielders of the ball around. Don’t get me wrong, Hazard has a number of other qualities that make him the player he is but the way he shields the ball to prevent himself from being dispossessed is brilliant and Pulisic should look into this to offset his lack of strength and size as if he puts his body in front of the ball well enough then the only way the defender is going to get the ball is by fouling him.
Overall Pulisic looks an astounding talent with great potential and his unbelievable ball control and dribbling ability combined with his determined nature could see him make it to the top. Already hailed as ‘outstanding’ by Thomas Tuchel, if he continues his progression at Dortmund then plenty of top clubs will come knocking at his door soon.
