Marco Asensio is one of the most exciting prospects in European football with the Metro recently linking him with a £40m move to Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United. Asensio won the Golden Player award in 2015 for his performances in the U19 European Championships and has gone from strength to strength ever since. After a successful loan spell at Espanyol, where he finished the campaign with an impressive 12 assists, Asensio returned to Real Madrid for the 2016/2017 season and has hit the ground running, so here’s a bit more about the Spanish attacker.
When watching Asensio play, the first thing you’ll notice will inevitably be his incredible ball control. Asensio loves to receive the ball in tight congested areas and pull defenders about before adding a quick burst of pace to leave them in the dust. The confidence he has in his own ability is staggering but at the same time well justified as he is prepared to take on possession surrounded by 3 or 4 at a time. Unlike some players of his age, Asensio seems to have a cool head on his shoulders and has composure in abundance.
Asensio is also blessed with a fair amount of pace and is an excellent ball carrier. Not only is Asensio quick but he also has a decent engine on him and will always back himself to beat a player for pace over a long distance, the best example of this being on his Real Madrid debut vs Sevilla were he stunned the crowd by carrying the ball from his own box to the opposition’s before applying a cool finish – not a bad way to announce yourself on the big stage!
Overall Asensio is a sublime athlete and this combined with his fantastic technical ability leaves me in no doubt that the hype around him is more than justified. The 21-year-old has not looked out of place in the Real Madrid side his season and his 8 goals are a testament to that.
