It’s that time of year again, yes that time when everyone starts arguing about who’s better: Ronaldo or Messi. I think we’re still a year shy of someone other than those two picking up the Ballon D’or, however that doesn’t detract from the fact that there’s plenty of other talent on the 30-man shortlist, so much so that there were some surprising omissions.
One player to miss out on the shortlist is Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero. With 7 goals in just 8 matches so far this season, the Argentine has started where he left off, adding to his tally of 33 goals last season. Aguero is a serial goalscorer but is being repeatedly overlooked when it comes to individual accolades with him also failing to feature in any Premier League team of the season to date.
Gonzalo Higuain is another Argentine striker who is notably missing from the 30-man shortlist. The big man hit 33 goals last season for Juventus and has already registered 4 times this campaign but that wasn’t enough to put him in contention for the award.
In my opinion the biggest surprise is that Giorgio Chiellini‘s name was not on the list. Chiellini was at his imperious best last season, leading Juventus to the Champions League final in a campaign that involved keeping Barcelona quiet enough over two legs. Juventus enjoyed a superb Champions League run which included a lengthy stretch without even conceding and this is hugely down to the veteran Italian. Juve also picked up the Italian title but despite an excellent season individually, Chiellini has been left off.
When the shortlist was fully announced, the most talked about omission was Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez and I can see why. Whilst not being at his best so far this season, the Chilean has been brilliant in the last year, shown in the fact that he was involved in 49 goals in 51 appearances. His ability is clear to see and to leave him out is criminal.
Perhaps one of the less notable absentees is Real Madrid’s Casemiro. The Brazilian won the double with Real Madrid last year, putting in some excellent performances at the heart of the Madrid midfield. Still underrated by many, Casemiro won a lot of fans last year with his powerful displays and can count himself unlucky to not be considered.
These five aren’t the only unlucky ones with other huge players missing out such as: Bale, Pogba, Iniesta, Never, Vidal and Lemar to name a few.
